Elk Grove, California

Another glorious day with hot weather in the 90degF, clear blue skies.  It’s father’s day here, so Neil is impressed because it means he will get 2 Father’s day this year!  We are still not into rushing around yet – that comes tomorrow when we head off west.

We're staying at my cousin's house in Elk Grove, which is south of Sacramento.  It's a lovely little community with quite quaint shops, but over the last few years has really grown substantially with lots of new subdivision.

THE WATER AISLE AT COSTCO - AND IT WAS BOTH SIDES!

Today we headed off with family to Costco which is a HUGE grocery place which you can join and just do your regular shopping.  But it is huge, selling anything from 90 inch TVs for about $1700 to regular food items.  And things are CHEAP – CHEAP – CHEAP – 24 bottles of water for about $3.50, a whole aisle was selling different brands of water.  18 inch pizzas were common and everything comes in a box.  Kinda weird when you see all the tv programmes on cooking, but then everyone buys packaged food and doesn't cook from scratch.  However saying that, most of it tastes pretty good.
TRACTOR HEAVEN

INDIAN CHIEF

SO DRY AND THIS GOES FOR MILES AND MILES AND THE COLOR OF THE SKY IS TRUE BLUE

We passed a graveyard for tractors which was outside this farm type store which also had a giant Indian chief and buffalo!  Fun to see.  The landscape is brown.  So dry, nothing for any grazing animals at all.
Grocery items at places like Walmart are cheap too – America I don’t think you realize how cheap your food is – roasted chickens for $4.99!

Though I have been to the US many times it really does hit you that everything is big, and there is soooo much variety.    Not just clothes, but food.

We’ve been playing with our new GPS – got lost once with it LOL, but we’re getting the hang of technology and driving.  Tomorrow we head to South Lake Tahoe where we’ll be at casino but attending the 50th Ford Vintage car gathering over a few days.

That's all for today...on the road tomorrow as the trip really and truly starts!

Jane and Neil - watch out America the kiwis are on the road!

How are you holding up to the heat? I thought that was THE car Neil was driving and I was sighing enviously. LOL.
Did you take any pics of downtown Sacramento? I've read that it is a really quaint town. Your posts are giving me itchy feet to get travelling again.
We can actually see the sun today. The South Island is taking a battering with floods etc...guess they could do with a little of our rain over there.
