day one - We've landed

Hi everyone out there.
Well, we've arrived.  What a journey - fun, but long too.  No pics today, forgot to put the camera in the car, which was a shame as we had a chance to take some great shots.
Anyway... we arrived in San Francisco on time, Jane given the wonderful(!!!) opportunity to exit the plane on a wheelchair which actually got us thru customs etc, really quick giving Uncle Sam a pic and fingerprints on the way thus declaring us suitable citizens to enter this huge bit of dirt.  Neil of course looked like the bag boy running beside me.
Then we had to take this mono rail thing to the car rental place - my oh my - here i was thinking it would be like Auckland airport and just be in the airport terminal, but no, this place is HUGE - about 20 different rental car companies set up together and about 500 people checking out cars at the same time.
We had booked an American car - a Dodge - but they wanted to give us this Japanese import -Neil was rather indignant (as u who know him, how he can be) and said I'm in the US, i want to drive an American car, so they nicely gave us a Chrysler - very smooth!!
The car people suggested an alternative route to Elk Grove (near Sacramento), unfortunately they did not take into account friday afternoon rush hour traffic  - rush being quite the wrong word as we really DID NOT rush anywhere for 2 hours - a trip which should have taken about 2 hours max took us 4 but that did include getting lost twice - not my fault, really, truly.
But we did see some sights.  A wonderful skyline of San Francisco, the golden gate bridge in the distance, vegies and fruit growing alongside the freeway (yes i'm in American speak already!) and the crops are going for miles and miles and as far as the eye can see.
Yep this a big bit of dirt with a lot of mouths to feed.

Anyway, we're here, fed, watered, and catching up with family

Hope this comes thru, if u can, leave a message just to let me know i'm not talking to myself
Promise u some photos tomorrow.

Hugs to everyone.
Jane and Neil as they drive across the USA

You and Neil have been in my thoughts a lot. I subscribed by email to be sure I'd get your posts. Am so glad to know you have arrived safely. would loved to have seen you exiting in a wheelchair.
You are missing nothing at home today, it's wall to wall rain nationwide. And bleeding cold this morning. You need a Nav-man, our new car has one and Marty drove me to Papamoa yesterday for our Coast 2 Coast meeting of RWNZ and when we made a detour the indignant voice told us we were going the wrong way...Hey we just went up the main street to the bakery to get something for lunch. LOL.

Looking forward to hearing more about you and your Chrysler. What colour is it? And does it have a name yet? Or is the American car industry still like Henry Ford..."You can have any colour you like...as long as it's black!"

  5. Hi Jane

Glad to hear you made it safe and sound to the land of the free and the home of the brave. And good on you for taking the wheel chair option! - Many times I've wanted to feign some kind of injury to get that chair treatment and get out of there faster!!!
Save me some tips on 'American speak' - so you can come back and educate me for my Ben-character.
Down here in the land of the long white cloud we can only see the long white cloud right now - with buckets of rain pouring out of it!
